Derek Jarvis

Raised in the small mining towns of northern Ontario, Derek found his interest for all things ocean watching Mike Nelson on Sea Hunt, the 1950s television series. While backpacking in Europe in 1972, Derek was offered his first position as crew on a pre-war wooden cutter bound for Brazil. This is when the passion came to life. Derek learned navigation and seamanship during this voyage, and his talents have grown exponentially over the years.

By 1986, Derek had owned 2 of his own sailing vessels and spent 12 years cruising the Caribbean and Pacific Islands. Derek then captained sailing yachts up to 80 feet in size both privately owned and by charter and has delivered vessels to all corners of the globe.

He has logged over 175,000 nautical miles and completed 7 trans-Atlantic and 3 trans-Pacific crossings. In 2002 Derek began a new chapter as a yacht broker, working for a local brokerage in Fort Lauderdale. It wasn’t long before Derek’s knowledge and expertise brought him to the forefront as the “go-to guy” for sailing vessels within the firm. Honest, easygoing and knowledgeable are a few of the adjectives previous clients have used to describe Derek. He now hopes to help you achieve the dream he has lived.

A favorite among sailing cruising enthusiasts the Hunter 380 is an excellent sailboat design that is safe, fast, and capable of long-distance shore cruising at the same time that it offers a unique social platform with a spacious cockpit and interior.

Alebrije sails equally graciously in 5 to 30-knot winds and is very easy to shorten sail thanks to the in-mast roller mainsail system and the electric winch. She has been to the Bahamas once a year for the last 10+ years. The combination of AIS receiver, Radar, and Sirius Weather provide exceptionally safe and relaxing crossings at any time day or night, making every passage a breeze. Her shoal wing keel allows for excellent pointing and for exploring the shallow water of those beautiful islands.

The feathering 4-blades propeller allows you to eliminate drag and achieve maximum speed while providing exceptional stopping power and maneuverability in forward and reverse.

A sugar scoop transom with a cold/warm concealed shower makes for an excellent platform for swimming and snorkeling.

An electric WC using freshwater eliminates those pesky odors that are so familiar with saltwater systems. The standing shower with a tropical wood floor makes every visit to the bathroom a pleasure.

At the marina hook to the electric grid to enjoy the AC and connect the water to the main supply to enjoy pressure water on the boat and stay in your bathroom without consuming your water reserve,

At anchor, turn the diesel generator to power the AC leaving mosquitoes outside to have a relaxing night. Use the electric windlass to lift your anchor when it is time to go.

Alebrije is ready to set sail and take you to paradise!
