The Cambria 40/42 was specifically designed and built for those sailors who seek the benefits of a modern proper yacht. The Cambria 40 is molded of hand laid fiberglass with a 3/4 inch airex core. Bi-directional and triaxial fiberglass materials are used in the hull & deck and for bulkhead attachment. Airex insures maximum sound and thermal insulation and further insures the strongest bond to inner and outer glass laminates. A keel grid (which stiffens the bilge area and supports the cabin sole) is bonded to the hull and integrated with the mast step and engine mounts to form a single unit.
An optimum hull-to-deck joint is obtained with an internal deck flange at the sheer. Below water thru-hull fittings are marine bronze full-way seacocks bedded on solid glass (core material is removed and replaced with solid glass). The approximately 9,500lb molded lead ballast keel provides protection in the event of grounding and is secured to the hull with 1" L-shaped stainless steel bolts and 5200 bedding compound. Additional fiberglass reinforcement is incorporated in stress areas, such as stern, keel transom and skeg. Chain plate knees of solid fiberglass laminate are bonded to the hull and deck and become a structural part of the interior hull. A spacing material is placed between the bulkhead and the hull with a radius filler and attachment is then accomplished with glass strand ties every foot followed by multiple layers of tabbing on each side of the bulkhead.
The deck and cockpit are a one-piece fiberglass molding that is cored with a stiff PVC material to provide maximum strength. PVC core is preferred as a deck core material for water resistance and superior bonding. Higher density material is used in the area of the mast, winches and other high-stress areas. The deck is bonded to the internal flange of the hull with 5200 (strongest bedding material for this purpose) and thru bolted on 8" centers. The toe rail is in turn thru bolted on alternate 8" centers, which provides a thru fastener in the hull deck joint every four inches. This assures a strong permanent and watertight hull-to-deck joint.
The cockpit shape allows ample room for the helmsman and crew to sail efficiently and safely and is particularly well suited to shorthanded sailing. Cockpit seat-back height and angle provide maximum comfort. Cleats are recessed to allow helmsman and crew seating on full length winch bases. A modern offshore radial wheel steering system is standard with two Harken rudder post roller bearings and an additional bronze lower bearing is attached to the skeg. Steering is accomplished with a stainless wheel and an Edson pedestal with a 6" compass, stainless steel binnacle, brake, guard and engine controls. An easily installed direct emergency tiller steering system is provided. A complete range of engine instruments and switches is recessed in a location which is handy to the helmsman. All deck hardware such as lifeline stanchions, genoa tracks, bridge traveler, winches, blocks, turning block bases, cleats and fairleads are thru bolted and backed. Stainless steel double rail pulpits with double lifelines and port and starboard gates are standard along with a custom polished stainless stemhead with anchor chock and roller. Teak toe rail package included on the Custom Cruising 40. A non-skid surface is molded and an integral part of the deck. T-section anodized aluminum genoa track (1 1/4" x 3/8") is provided. A translucent entrance hatch provides light and ventilation over the companionway. In addition, there are deck skylight hatches, six opening stainless steel ports, with screens and beveled spigots, and three Dorade ventilators maximize light & ventilation below.
The mast is stepped through the deck onto aluminum mast step with an adjustable shoe to ensure proper mast rake. The mast step is fastened to 1/2" metal insert plates embedded in the keel grid.
The engine is mounted to a custom base which is in turn fastened to metal insert plates embedded in the keel grid. The engine mounts provided with slotted holes to facilitate proper alignment of the engine and the shaft.
The fiberglass rudder is built around a stainless steel stock with welded stainless steel flanges. The stock is attached to a Harken roller bearing mounted on the cockpit floor and passes through a second roller bearing at the water line with the seal above. An additional bronze bearing is attached to the lower portion of the skeg.
The interior is finished in teak and other optional hardwoods. Hull sides are sheathed with teak battens (ceilings) which are set off the hull to provide ventilation and additional insulation. The outboard sides of all lockers are finished in the same manner. The cabinsole is teak with contrasting inlay and is removable for access to the bilge. Lockers are wood lined with the addition of cedar to the main hanging lockers. Countertops are surfaced with formica. The cabin headliner is installed in removable sections.
The galley is located to port of the companionway. A 4 bur er stainless stove with oven and broiler is gimballed in a stainless steel liner. Propane is stored in two 10# tanks, in individually vented cockpit lockers, and the fuel supply is monitored by an electric solenoid shut-off located in the galley are. A double stainless steel sink is supplied with hot & cold water. Two ice boxes incorporate a vapor barrier with maximum foam insulation. A bank of 3 drawers along with a bread box is adjacent to the main refrigeration box. Two large multi- shelf lockers with sliding glass doors are located outboard of the stove and counter.
The standard main cabin layout offers transom and pilot berths and "L" shaped seating that converts to a double berth to port. At the foot of the companionway to starboard is a navigation center with wet locker. An additional locker is located to starboard forward of the starboard settee. Locker storage is also located outboard of the transom berths both port and starboard. A custom drop leaf table can comfortably seat four to six people. A large hatch opening with translucent cover is located in the overhead of the main cabin. There are handrails mounted on the waterways under the port lights running the full length of the cabin, and a vertical post is set into the laminated arch entrance at the base of the companionway.
A spacious navigation table is located opposite the galley providing ample space for charts and navigation related gear. Additional chart storage is available above the quarter berth in a separate chart storage tube. Space is provided for a built-in radar as well as additional equipment. The master electronics panel and battery switches are also located in the navigation area. A separate navigation seat, that also serves as a tool storage locker, is located forward of the quarter berth.
The forward cabin is arranged wit V-Berths. A bank of large drawers and seat is standard with the custom cruising interior. There is a large opening hatch with translucent cover located in the overhead of the forward cabin. The hinged V-berth tops open to provide access to additional storage under the berths, An arched privacy door separates the forward cabin from the main salon.
A large head with Separate stall shower is provided forward. The shower drains through a teak grating to a sump tank that is discharges directly overboard by a 12 volt DC pump. A locker with shelves and hamper are built in outboard and a mirror is located above the sink.
A heavy duty, expanded capacity, 12 volt DC electrical system provides the ship's electrical power with a two deep-cycle heavy-duty house batteries and one heavy-duty engine-starting battery. A 90 AMP alternator is mounted on the engine. A custom Bass 33 breaker DC electrical panel with load and battery condition indicator is provided. Three electric power distribution centers provide for zoning of the electrical system and facilitate accessibility for servicing circuits or adding equipment. Master switches are provided for both engine starting and house circuits. Dome lights mounted in the overhead provide for general cabin lighting and Danish bulkhead mounted reading lights are provided over berths and at the navigation center. Bonding of thru hull fittings, standing rigging and major components uses fully insulated copper wire.
Auxiliary power is supplied by a 46 HP freshwater cooled diesel. The stainless steel shaft passes through a dripless stuffing box and is supported outboard by a custom bronze strut and cutlass bearing. A welded 5052 alloy fuel tank with 60 gallon capacity is provided and the fuel line is fitted with a Racor water separating filter. The exhaust system is constructed of heavy-duty exhaust hose and uses a water lift type muffler. An isolation bilge is provided below the engine. The engine compartment is sound insulated and equipped with an exhaust blower. The instrument panel is provided with a tachometer, oil pressure gauge, engine temperature gauge and a voltmeter showing condition of the starting battery. Alarms are also provided for low oil pressure and high cooling water temperature.
Fresh water is stored in three welded stainless steel tanks connected by a selection manifold. Each tank is provided with baffles, electric level gauge and clean out plate. The pressure water system, equipped with a heavy-duty water pump and accumulator tank, provides hot & cold water to the galley and head. Hot water is provided by a stainless steel, engine and dockside heated hot water tank. Two bilge pumps are provided; a manual pump operable from the cockpit, and a 12 volt DC automatic pump located in the bilge sump at the foot of the companionway.
The keel stepped mast is aluminum extrusion, custom tapered, Awlgripped and equipped with internal halyards and tapered aluminum spreaders. Standing rigging is Navtec solid stainless rod with turnbuckles leading to stainless chainplates. The mainsheet traveler arrangement uses a Harken traveler with double cars, control lines and stoppers. Double Harken turning blocks are mounted aft on custom welded bases. International running lights foredeck, strobe and spreader lights are standard.
