Annapolis, MD
Hi, I'm Bernie Jakits. After 20 years of owning and running a successful brokerage in Annapolis, my partner Kate Christensen and I have merged our company with David Walters Yachts. We are happy and excited to be a part of something bigger and continue to live our passion that started long ago. When I was an engineer in the aerospace industry I had lots of time to read every sailboat review and follow every development in the industry. I dreamed of one day owning a distinctly different brokerage firm and it all came true when in 1997 I started RogueWave Yacht Sales It came out of a passion for the sea and love for the beautiful vessels that sail on her. My vision was to create a new kind of brokerage dedicated to honesty and integrity and desire to help people be successful and achieve their bluewater sailing vision. Kate Christensen joined me in 2001 to share that vision and bring her talents and expertise in business and marketing as well as her passion for sailing her Bristol Channel Cutter. Over 20 years, we built an incredible brokerage and consulting firm specializing in ocean going vessels and live aboard cruising sailboats. We have advised and guided over 800 Clients worldwide from as far away as Hong Kong, Brazil, Australia, Europe and everywhere between, so that they too can also achieve their dream of owning and cruising with a capable bluewater vessel to find and reach their own horizons. We have the experience and expertise required to really help people.
For over 45 years, I have sailed, delivered and worked on hundreds of different types of vessels. Representing many clients, I have sailed in the North Sea to Med, across the Atlantic, and in the South China Sea and the, Pacific, the Caribbean Islands and also both Coasts of the USA. Having owned and maintained over 3 million dollars worth of sailing vessels, I have vast experience with incredible sailing vessels from the Hallberg Rassy 53 or a Valiant 40 & 42, a Norseman 447, a PSC34, and a BCC28. I've sailed to many foreign ports and also lived aboard while raising a family. Kate and I have had the opportunity to have incredible sailing adventures aboard our boats from the amazing Bristol Channel Cutter to the Hallberg Rassy 53 and finally our Valiant 42 that we built new in 2008 when we were Valiant Dealers in Annapolis. We have sailed far and lived aboard; we have led the Caribbean 1500 to the Bahamas. We have raced to Bermuda. We have delivered boats from the North Sea to the Med and from Guatemala to Annapolis and of course from the Caribbean to Annapolis many times. Through that experience we can help cruising couples make the right decisions. I have decommissioned and shipped many vessels and put them back together again, for myself and also for our clients. I have upgraded each vessel we owned installing every system imaginable, and maintaining every boat properly. I have taught and advised clients so that they themselves will have a pleasant and rewarding experience. Being a fellow boat owner and having personally experienced both sides of being a buyer and a seller, I understand your concerns.
With these many years of experience I have come to know and appreciate what a truly high caliber blue water sailing yachts is and should be. As a licensed & bonded professional yacht broker, please give me the pleasure of helping you define your requirements and help choose your next passage making/offshore capable sailing or power yacht. My experience is gained from having had a 100 Ton USCG Master License, being a Captain on several ocean races, having been a Marine Surveyor, and of course my background as an MSME Mechanical Engineer. And most important of all, I have sailed over 100,000 offshore miles, on my own boats and delivering countless boats for client to about everywhere.
Now as the RogueWave Division of David Walters Yachts, Kate and I carry on the RogueWave traditions as Your Choice for Bluewater Boats! We continue to specialize in the bluewater boats we love; the vessels of quality, style, and substance. This is a very special offering! One of just a few Valiant 42 raised salon vessels. Bon Vivant was initially rigged with two headsails and she circumnavigated in the 90s. She has been completely restored and upgraded with a new 55hp Volvo diesel, new transmission, newly painted mast and boom, new rod rigging, new epoxy bottom, new bottom paint, and the interior updated with new salon windows, varnished cabin sole, new sinks and stove, and so much more. She is a must see vessel!
The Valiant 42 Raised Salon is and amazing vessel. She was built in 1992 by the Valiant Yachts Company in Texas. There were a number of Valiant 40s that were built in the Pacific Northwest where people really get to enjoy sailing a whole lot more with a raised salon pilothouse sailboat. In 1992 Valiant Yachts launched the Valiant 42 and built two of these raised salon vessels. To some people living "down below" is just not that appealing. The raised salon offers sailors an opportunity to enjoy 360 views and get out of the weather, be it too much rain or too much sun.
This is what Valiant had to say in the original brochure…” The Valiant 42RS incorporates the same proven offshore hull form (as the Valiant 40) with a structural skeg mounted deep rudder and powerful long fin cruising keel. This powerful combination insures excellent control and tracking on and off the wind. And the external, bolted on lead ballast provides excellent defense against accidental grounding, while it also allows for a low stabilizing center of gravity which optimizes performance and safety.”
Indeed the Valiant 42 Raised Salon is a Valiant first and foremost. She is a true cutter rig with a unique double headsail rig which is wonderful for sailing downwind. The traditional mainsail is easily managed. She is a great sailing Valiant with all the pedigree and well dissevered reputation. In addition to how the boat sails, she is also built like a tank! A very well thought out tank. The Valiant is incredibly tough, robustly dependable, and entirely possible to maintain anywhere in the world. The solid hand laid fiberglass hull is robust and literally everything about the boat is seriously overbuilt which gives you and your mate great confidence in all conditions. The teak interior is built into the hull with solid bulkheads and a system of robust longitudinal and latitudinal structural members. The lead keel is bolted to the solid glass keel stub and glued with 5200. The 5’8” draft makes this vessel appealing everywhere from the coves of New England to the Intercoastal to Florida and the Bahamas. The mast height is 58’7 above the waterline so she is easily ICW friendly. The systems installations are top notch with everything properly engineered and installed in a way that makes it easy to maintain the boat anywhere in the world. You can actually access every single piece of the boat. The engine access in the RS is magnificent which makes her ever so easy to maintain. The new Volvo is a 55hp with the Max Prop pushes the boat nicely at hull speed. Every piece, tanks, engine, everything can come out the companionway the way it came in!
The Valiant 42 Raised Salon interior is extremely livable. You have everything you need! You have a really beautiful navigation station to starboard with a wonderful large galley to port, the salon is spacious with an L shaped dining area to port and straight settee berth to starboard, up forward of the main bulkhead is a huge pilot berth to starboard with a large head with stall shower adjacent to port. Forward is an amazing large owners cabin with a V-berth arrangement with tons of storage. The mechanical space where the new upgraded engine is located is wonderfully accessible under the cabin sole of the raised salon. She’s a wonderful home and the best world cruising voyager you could ever wish for.
Bon Vivant has been lovingly cared for and upgraded. She is in excellent condition and has received many upgrades including the following highlights:

Accommodations Bon Vivant is a wonderful cruising home with the spacious main salon with the large windows you can see out. From the companionway it is just a few small steps down to the raised salon. The large galley is to port and it is really really large. The nav station to starboard is perfectly located at the base of the companionway which is on the starboard side of the cockpit. The main salon is raised with bright windows and a large L-shaped dinette to port and a straight settee - sea berth to starboard aft of the nav station. The engine space is beneath the cabin sole of the raised salon and there is incredible storage also. The owner's quarters are up forward just two steps down with the large head to port and an incredible pilot berth, child's stateroom or just storage to starboard! It is huge with a pipe berth above also. Adjacent the pilot berth to port is the large head with amazing storage and a huge stall shower and locker. The spacious forward cabin has a large berth, a true vee berth, with a custom mattress and the insert to make a full queen berth. There are drawers on the port side and access to storage under the berth. The chain locker is forward of the berth. This Valiant is so unique in terms of the space and storage it is remarkable. A family of five circumnavigated aboard years ago in the 90s! Bon Vivant has been enjoyed and lightly cruised by her current owner for 16 years. His cruising was mainly to Block Is the Elizabeth Islands, and Nantucket. Mostly her owner enjoyed caring for the boat and upgrading her. What a lucky boat she is and what an amazing home she will be for some lucky sailors. The raised salon provides excellent visibility and a sense of spaciousness. The windows are non opening 1/2' thick Lexan portlights installed just like airplane windows. There are two large opening portlights with tempered glass on the forward side of the cabin so you can have the breeze blowing through the boat. There is no feeling of being "down below"!

Galley & Plumbing The U-shaped galley is one of the most important aspects of a great cruising boat and the Valiant 42 has a galley coveted by all cruisers because it has everything you need including the Valiant pantry!
