Aries is an exceptional example of this popular, highly regarded cruising design. The maintenance has been extraordinary; she may be the finest 43 offered for resale in a long while. Aries is a true classic, with a show quality interior and outstanding performance. She has enjoyed the benefit of two very fastidious owners and currently resides on the freshwater of Lake Michigan.
Like all Shannons, Aries is strong and capable, has many custom features, and is loaded with all the equipment one would expect in a high-quality bluewater cruising yacht. This Shannon 43 Ketch is ready to sail today.
The Shannon cutter /ketch rig offers two independent headsails to facilitate shorthanded sailing, and the versatile keel/centerboard design provides shoal draft access to many additional anchorages. Aries does well in light winds or driving to windward with the centerboard down in bluewater and higher winds. Aries is very easy to sail with a couple and has a spacious interior arrangement. The design was featured in Ferenc Mate's "The World's Best Sailboats."
Shannon Boat Company has a well-earned reputation for building among the world's finest and most beautiful offshore yachts. Aries is an excellent example of what New England artisans can achieve when given the time to do it right. The varnished cherry woodwork with raised panel doors provides a class ambiance. There are a high gloss grooved white headliner and teak and holly sole with white interior trunks.
Aries is a two stateroom, two head layout with a generous salon and large U-Shaped galley. The interior is finished with a handsome cherry interior and a beautiful hand-laid teak and holly satin-finished cabin.

Aries has a large salon with an L-shaped settee to starboard and a straight settee to port, both covered in leatherette (seats) and coordinating durable fabric (backrests), both of which are in excellent condition. To starboard is a built-in liquor cabinet. There is a lovely varnished teak salon dining table that easily seats six adults. The interior design is in the Herreshoff style with white Formica bulkheads. There are four LED reading lights and mounted fans for added light and ventilation. All floor panels, drawers, and cabinets have furniture-grade fixtures.
The forward cabin is separated from the main salon by a privacy door and includes ensuite access to the forward head. The forward head has a vanity, medicine cabinet, lockers, and a shower wand.
Across from the galley is the aft double door head. One head door gives access to the passageway, and the second provides private ensuite access to the aft cabin. The guest cabin to port and aft of the head has a sizeable double berth, hanging locker, and bureau. There are handrails throughout the interior, including double handrails the length of the salon. The doors are raised-panel cherry, with white insets in the heads.
To starboard of the salon is the galley, in excellent proximity to the companionway for use in a seaway. The galley is crafted of fine cherry and white Formica. The double stainless sink has SeaGull filtered water, hot and cold pressurized water, and a freshwater foot pump. The Tasco three-burner propane stove with oven is outboard of the galley sink and forward of the fridge. The countertops are white Formica, and the top-loading fridge doors are trimmed with cherry.
The freezer is cooled by an engine-driven holding plate. The SeaFrost system provides exceptional cooling for the fridge. The fridge and the freezer have independent thermometers. Ample storage is located outboard of the galley, and more can be found below the galley sink, along with the manifold for the three freshwater tanks. The opening hatch above the galley and opening portlight offer plenty of light and air for anyone using this space.
Aries has an aft-facing navigation center on the starboard side of the boat aft of the galley featuring a full-size chart table, storage locker, pedestal captain's chair.
The electronics have been recently upgraded and include a B&G Zeus2 12" Chartplotter (2017) integrated with a B&G Halo24 radar (2019) and B&G Triton2 depth, speed, and wind instrumentation in the cockpit (2017). There is also a Simrad forward scanning sonar with thru-hull transducer (2017), a B&G V50 VHF radio with H50 handset (2019), Simrad AP25 autopilot, and an ACR GlobalFix V4 EPIRB Cat II (2017).
Aries is ready for tropical sailing with a white hull accented by a forest green boot stripe and a light gray nonskid deck. The Airex cored hull above the waterline gives Aries superior sound and thermal insulation, and strength. She has a modified full keel with a centerboard and skeg hung rudder.
Aries has a fiberglass PVC cored foam deck (no balsa!). The molded grey nonskid decks feature the Shannon exclusive diamond pattern providing excellent traction and attractive aesthetics. There are large hatches on the foredeck and amidships and two smaller hatches over the galley and aft cabin. Four dorades allow air to flow continuously through the boat.
The cockpit is large, very comfortable with high backrests, and features excellent access to the machinery and storage areas. The steering pedestal is made by Edson. The engine controls are single lever and made by Morse. The folding cockpit table easily seats six adults.
Under the starboard, seating is a large lazarette allowing side access to the engine. The port side has one shallow locker over the second cabin and a deep locker for additional storage or the future installation of a generator. The comfortable helm seat opens to offer access to the propane tanks. Lines are led aft to facilitate shorthanded sailing.
The Shannon cutter/ketch rig is very versatile and allows for a large sail area in light wind and a very balanced rig under any situation. The sail inventory, all made by Quantum, includes a fully battened mainsail and mizzen, 115 genoa, staysail, and Yankee. The stack pack, also by Quantum, was replaced in 2020.
The stainless rod rigging for the main mast was replaced in 2019, and the mizzen mast in 2017. The headsails each have a Harken roller furler, and there is a whisker pole for downwind sailing. All the winches are Lewmar with two primary electric winches and two manual secondary winches in the cockpit, two on the mizzen, and four on the mainmast. The mainsheet winch is also electric.
Aries has both 12-volt DC and 110-volt AC electric systems with appropriate breakers. The twelve-volt system has a Xantrex Freedom combination battery charger and inverter integrated with the vessel's seven Group 31 Dual-Purpose AGM house batteries for a total house capacity of 735 AH. Interior reading lights and exterior lights have been upgraded to LED.
