Some yacht designers get very close to designing a proper sailing yacht, but not many hit the nail on the head. Sure, there’s many that get close but If I had to pick the yacht designers that made their mark in a sailor’s heart; I???d have to say German Frers with his Swans, Bruce Farr with his speed demons, the team of Ted Hood/Ted Fontaine, Bruce King with his Hinckley SW70, Bob Perry with his magical and very simple Valiant 40 and then we have Chuck Paine, master artist that was able to take further the grace of the perfect sheer line, and the perfect balance of beam and length, and an underbody that is as graceful and beautiful as a leaping dolphin on a glassy ocean…..
Chuck Paine has taken the art of yacht design to the level of actual artwork. From his Bermuda Series of serious ocean cruising powerhouse voyagers, to the very pretty and very expensive Maine built yachts that grace the still waters of New England.
Now, we blend the talents of Chuck Paine with the hundreds of years of shipbuilding talents that was born in England. Some 30 years ago, some of the very best and biggest ocean sailing vessels were created/built in England, if it was Camper Nicholson, Oyster and Rivel Bowman which grow into Rustler. Ask yourself, what was the biggest sailing disaster, yes the 605 mile 1979 Fastnet Race…these are the boats that sailed these waters…
Our new listing is a 2000 Chuck Paine Bowman 48 Aft Cockpit Cutter which was born with these roots mentioned above, if in design and in build. Yet ever so graceful, but powerful, easily handled in all conditions, comfortable at sea or at anchor and yes, very beautiful, the Chuck Paine Bowman 48 hit the nail on the head.
Berschert as she’s called has a history. She placed first out of some 200 plus boats in the 2003 ARC (Atlantic Rally from the Canary Islands to St. Lucia) Rally. Her sistership, which this listing broker sold, then named Sundella now Fortunate, also won line honors in the ARC several years later.
Berschert is ready to enjoy with a modern deck saloon configuration, which was way ahead of the times. She offers a hard dodger and hard bimini, bow thruster, very low hour generator, a very clean Perkins M92 diesel, a two stateroom two bath layout with a very bright and airy saloon, fully air conditioned, hot water radiator heat, a full aft workshop, water maker, great electronics, proper ground tackle, large workable galley on all points of sail, a rig that is easy to manage in all weather and a bulletproof design and build that surpasses 90% of the “other” stuff floating around. Berschert has all the necessary equipment and gear needed to venture afar on.
Her hull, bottom, rig, mechanicals, teak decks, interior and sails are all way above average condition. She feels, looks and smells half her age...
Two boat owner wants her sold and appreciated as he and his family has done. She is ready to depart for another adventure. Why spend a quarter of a million dollars on another boat of lesser quality, that will fall apart after the first gale she's in, when you can have this proven ocean voyager for the same amount. Don't believe what you read in today's sailing magazines about boat awards and boat of the year stuff, for its there only for the paid advertisers, for it's as close to fake news one can ever get.
Give this Bowman 48 a good long look, for she won't disappoint you ever, especially when the stuff hits the fan out there.
Yacht Description, Specifications & Equipment: Interior Walkthrough...From Bow to Stern: Forward, resides the Master Stateroom with an offset double pullman berth arrangement to port; dressing table, large sit-down seat and massive closet and cabinets to starboard. Plenty of light with large overhead hatch above bed. Aft to port resides the full bathroom with standup sit-down stall shower with radiator heat, large counter with deep sink and toilet. To starboard, aft of forward stateroom lies the two very large closets, running the entire length to forward facing sit down ship's office. Opposite is the very large U-shaped dining table, with outbox cabinets and hatches and opening ports throughout. The ships "kitchen' is also U-shaped providing a very safe and comfortable work area that one can cook, prepare a feast in and also feel part of the party. Engine is mid ship which is part of the galley area, access is from all four sides besides the top...engine room is fully sound deaded. Aft of galley is a TRUE workshop, which houses everything needed for a circumnavigation. Aft of the ship's office to starboard, is the day head guest head, also with heat. Aft of this is the aft stateroom with a large double, closet and drawers. Interior is finished in blond teak. This was the start of the very popular "raised saloon", only problem is that most of today's "raised saloons" are designed for the market place, not the demands of the sea; also today's so-called cookie cutter make believe clorox bottle boats call themselves voyagers. If you call a sail across some Bay a voyage, then let it be. This Paine Bowman 48 is all business, designed to get you there and back, safely swiftly and comfortably. Master Stateroom:

Cockpit Navigation:
Cockpit: The Bowman 48’s very sensible offshore cockpit offers comfort and safety at sea or on the hook. The Custom Hard Top Dodger, built with clear- non distorted Barrett Glass, creates a comfortable dry space in all weather conditions. Cockpit is covered by Helmsman’s Canopy with (2) Solar Panels (~260W) mounted over. Additionally, there are Sun Curtains on the Helmsman’s seat/area.
Deck and Rig: Chuck Paine designed sailing vessels all combine form/fit/and function. Everything makes sense, works and has only two things in mind. That is crew safety and ease of handling. Berschert has wide walk around decks accentuated with lovely teak decks. While all lines lead aft to the cockpit, her decks offer a comfortable space to relax and enjoy the sea and sun. Starting at the bow she has a large pulpit and high stanchions and lifelines. A bow mounted plow anchor with 200’ of Chain is mounted on roller and easily controlled with the electric Lewmar Windlass. The windlass can be operated from the bow with foot buttons or from the cockpit where a Quick Chain Counter keeps track of extended rode. Other features include:

Design Information: The Bowman 48 has been long recognized by the British yachting establishment as being the finest British built design ever offered to the conservative long distance sailor. She came about in response to the success of our Bowman 40, of which some 60 beautiful examples have been built since its introduction in the late 1980's. Those are small numbers to the mass production crowd, but indicative of a wonderful response by the high end yachtsmen who prefer a customized vessel and are willing to bear the attendant higher costs. Ten Bowman 48's are now cruising the world's oceans and with the acquisition of the molds by Rustler Yachts of Falmouth there are surely more to come. This design is an excellent representative of the more traditional design style which we have always specialized in at our office. The process is to select an aesthetic treatment that is timeless in its appeal, and to combine that shape with fully modern appendages, such as the highly successful Paine Keel with its efficient bulbed endplate, and updated interior treatments. While such a design will never approach the speeds of Bermuda Series types, they are fast in comparison with traditionally styled yachts of a few years ago, and have a lovely motion and forgiving steering and stability characteristics at sea. The design is completely optimized with all of the necessary gear, tankage, etc. to begin world cruising immediately after launch. In this way, the potential embarrassments of designing for weekend coasting and then adding the weights necessary for a round the world voyage are eliminated. Even the generator is included in the standard design and sales package and the yacht sails brilliantly with full cruising equipment, because she was designed with these weights in mind from day one. The deck features an integral pilothouse which permits large windows to be fitted in order to avoid the cramped feeling that can result from the conventional low house. The feeling of light and air that results is wonderful, as can be easily discerned from the accompanying photo. All of the long distance cruiser's needs are anticipated, and owners may be assured that the deck fittings are oversize for their loads, and the bow roller adequate for the oversize anchors that he is liable to fit aboard what is in most instances his home for the duration of the voyage. A long and cordial relationship has existed between Bowman Yachts and the Paine office. Rustler Yachts' Bowman 48 is EC certified for unlimited ocean service and will take you anywhere your heart desires in safety, comfort, and at excellent speed. |
