The Hylas 48 incorporates solid hand-laid fiberglass layup with no core and using vinylester resins and Isophthalic Gel-coat. The hull is laid up with two layers of epoxy barrier coats below the waterline for optimal protection followed by three coats of bottom paint. Watertight bulkheads are located forward of the forward cabin with independent overboard drainage as well as at the stern section across aft lazarettes and stern locker.
The deck is constructed of hand laid GRP with end grain balsa core with solid fiberglass in all areas for deck fittings and high-stress areas. A divided anchor locker with separate locker for fenders and warps is located forward with additional deck storage located aft with two, large stern lazarettes to port and starboard with secure locking latches. The stern locker also has a dedicated auto bilge pump plus manual over-ride in cockpit. The deck is finished with contrasting non-skid.
The solid lead keel has a draft of 6’ 6” while the semi-skegged rudder delivers optimal performance, strength and protection. The bottom of rudder plane is above the keel plane for grounding safety.
