The Apogee is the most distant, or highest point in a satellite orbit---the high point. Translated into sailing, think of the Apogee as a craft that can take you to the farthest reaches, while also being the high point for self-sufficiency, performance and safety. As a leader in a generation of faster, nimbler, more easily handle cruising yachts, the Apogee 50 sets many of the standards of utility, appearance and practicality that defined them as a finest offshore capable sailboats ever designed and built. Without any doubt, this would be my first and only choice in an offshore world voyager, there is none finer. 

The Apogee 50 designed by Chuck Paine and built by Able Marine is among our ultimate favorite sailing vessels for a couple to sail anywhere. She was designed to be easily sailed by a couple and good for a solo voyager to sail single-handed. Apogee 50’s have circumnavigated the globe, rounded the Horn, and chalked up numerous ocean crossings.

The Apogee is sleek and fast with an easily driven hull shape. Her long waterline of 45 plus feet and her powerful sail plan spells speed and comfort. With her lead ballast keel weighing in at 11,400 lbs, a raked back aluminum mast and fool-proof conventional slab reefing makes it a breeze to handle in all conditions, she has remarkable stability and momentum. She sails to weather exceedingly well and with the wind on the quarter she screams. This modern hull design, combined with the easily managed sail plan, makes this boat very special. Everything about the Apogee is designed with purpose and function as the foremost consideration. The hard top dodger is incredible because you are out of the weather. The large area under the dodger is essentially another nav station as you can have all your equipment right there. It is so comfortable, so safe, and so secure, enabling you to sail relaxed, warm, and dry under a wide range of conditions.  With two step down levels under the dodger, you can stand up completely in the companionway and have total visibility. With the autopilot remote you can steer from this secure vantage point. This vessel is designed for comfort and security both outside and inside.

Just two additional steps from the cockpit to the galley, head, and nav station make it easy to transit between the cockpit and cabin level and to communicate between areas. While the Apogee is first and foremost an amazing sailing vessel, she is also a lovely yacht down below that is a wonderful home for a couple and occasional guests. The quality is evident everywhere you look. From the teak and holly sole to the sweet cherry and maple joinery, the interior is perfection. She is light and bright and warm and solid. The Apogee is as delightful at anchor or at the dock as she is romping the ocean. Although technically you could sleep six, there is no reason you would want to because she is so easy for two people to sail.

Able Marine under the watchful eyes of its Founder and Leader, Ted Cooper, Able Marine was a small and extremely high-quality Maine Builder. But, after only 9 builds, all good things come to an end and the global economy feel apart, so did Able Marine. Able was then absorbed by another boat lover and genius, Tom Morris of Morris Yachts. They continued, using the same mold, building 3 more Apogees. There is no finer design to venture offshore on.

Our new Central Listing is hull number eight, named Arcadia. She has had only TWO Owners, real true Lovers of boats that treated her well. She never yet saw the Roaring Forties, in her young life, BUT she’s ready and able for it.

Arcadia is currently Owned by a seasoned sailor that knows boats and how to care for them. He owns one of the finest and largest Boatyards in Annapolis, so what Arcadia needed, Arcadia got.

Accommodations

The owner of this incredible rare and sought-after vessel has loved Arcadia well and enjoyed making several New England/Canada passages and one Annapolis to Bermuda run on her. Over these years he has maintained Arcadia as they would their home. She is the ultimate comfortable cruising home for a couple or family who loves to sail far. This boat is extremely lightly used and again, has been maintained by one of the finest Yards in Annapolis, regardless of cost because he owns the Yard. It doesn’t get any better than this.

Arcadia combines the high-tech hull design for which Chuck Paine is famous with the warmth of a traditional yacht interior. A real teak and holly cabin sole accentuates the soft glow of fine cherry joinery with beautiful cherry bulkheads and lovely accents. Above the cherry furnishings bright maple ceiling planks surround the long windows, contributing to the light and airy feel. All of the wood pieces are impeccably cut and varnished.  Everything about the interior is as beautiful as it is reassuring. You have only to look around you to confirm that the boat was extremely well built. Able Marine employed many of Maine’s finest craftsmen. 

The interior design can be well appreciated at the dock but its brilliance fully emerges at sea. It is only in a seaway that the true genius of yacht design becomes apparent. Handholds are always within reach just where you want them. Furniture edges are nicely rounded and not just for beauty! The cabins, designed for safety at sea, are cozy and purposeful. Although space is ample there are no giant open spaces where you can be thrown across in rough seas. The forward cabin is the “owners’ stateroom.”  With a lovely double pullman berth 6’ 7” long two people two people can sleep in comfort. A separate dresser, large hanging locker, and comfortable reading chair completes the cabin. It is well lit with a large overhead hatch, two long windows, four overhead lights and three reading lights making the cabin a bright space at all hours. The large overhead hatch and two air scoops provide ample ventilation. With headroom 6’ 4” throughout the owners’ cabin and the main saloon, galley, nav station, head and inside the entrance to the aft cabin even the tallest of sailors will be pleased.

The aft cabin to PORT have upper and lower bunks, accessible through a cabin door at the base of the companionway port side, is an ideal bedroom when coming off watch. It is smaller than the owners’ cabin but comfortable, with a 6’ 8” long berths that varies from a 3’ 10” width at the back end to 4’ 11” at the forward end.   

To STARBOARD is the aft stateroom offering her guests and comfortable huge double berth, hanging locker, combination of large and small drawers, and wrap around shelves, provides comfort and storage for an owner or other crew members. 

The main saloon just aft of the forward bulkhead is traditional with port and starboard settees 6’ 8” long on either side of the cabin and a large centerline drop-leaf table. It is a traditional layout because it totally works! Of course there is the necessary built in liquor cabinet and flatware drawers  in the table. There is ample storage behind above and outboard of the settees with beautiful cabinetry. It is comfortable space for relaxing, dining and, for additional sleeping berths on a passage. A Chelsea clock and matching barometer are mounted on the forward bulkhead.

The galley and nav station are just aft in the main saloon area located near the companionway. These essential areas are beautifully designed with voyaging in mind. Separate white and red lighting systems in the aft cabin, galley and at the base of the companionway allow crew members to come on and off watch without impairing night vision. It’s just one more feature that reveals the designer’s attention to detail.

The nav station is more than just a place to navigate. It is a ships office. The chart table is on starboard and faces outboard and is huge. The nav station is surrounded by all the ships instruments with displays, monitoring gauges, navigation equipment, radar and chart plotter, and communications equipment including the VHF radio, single side band radio, and Iridium Satellite phone. The ship’s office is a perfect spot to sit and relax or plan your next passage.

The galley to port is U-shaped, with entry from forward salon and is also something you appreciate even more underway. It is designed with wrap around counters and cabinets to provide a secure working space in all sea conditions. All that without sacrificing amenities because you have everything you need with a propane stove and oven, microwave, heavily insulated refrigeration and freezer compartments, and stainless steel sink. Louvered storage areas above and below the counters complete the galley. Hatches and air scoops above the galley and nav station keep them airy, and the hatches combine with overhead lights and long windows to keep them bright.

Everything is designed with purpose and safety in mind and as you’ll spend a lot of time below decks, it is lovely and comfy also. The cushions throughout the boat are in excellent condition. Her interior still looks brand new. You will be very pleased with everything you see.

The living quarters we’ve described are essentially a boat inside the boat with all the “business end” located in specifically designed spaces at the bow and at the aft end. You will be amazed at how well thought out all the storage and systems installations are.  At the bow, there is a large walk-in storage area, accessible from the forward cabin through a watertight door and also accessed from the deck through a large hatch. This fabulous feature gives you room for sail bags, fenders, lines, and all your other equipment. At the aft end of the living space a watertight door provides access to the amazing full width engine room and work space, housing all of the boat’s mechanical systems.  . This mechanical space is home to the Yanmar diesel engine, steering system, refrigeration and water making equipment, as well as storage compartments for years’ worth of filters, spare parts, and tools. At sea as well as at the dock, the engine and other mechanical systems can be accessed and tended do in an instant without the need to disassemble anything.  Three fuel tanks hold enough diesel to motor from Annapolis to Bermuda with many gallons to spare. 

The accommodations don’t stop with the interior of the boat. The thought that went into the interior carries through to the cockpit, where the highly desirable and unique “hard top dodger” enables two crew members to sit and operate the boat in comfort, surrounded on three sides by wrap around soft windows, while enjoying protection from the weather. Aft of the cozy space under the dodger there is ample space to lounge under the protection of a Bimini or sit in the sun all within the safety of the high cockpit coamings. Solid stainless steel railings surrounding the cockpit provide a lot more security than those little wire “life lines”.

This is a sailing yacht of the highest order build for the demands of the sea and providing the comfort and security that enable you to have a great time while passage making across oceans.

Galley & Plumbing

The galley of the Apogee 50 is one of the best designed galleys for safety at sea. It is secure in a seaway with wrap around counter space and it is designed to work as well on a passage as it does at anchor. The Force 10 stove, new in 2018, has three burners with an oven and the essential broiler. The microwave mounted within a louvered cabinet is great to have in the tropics or anywhere for that matter. The refrigeration system is excellent. It is a 12 volt Frigaboat system that keeps the separate top opening refrigerator and freezer compartments as cold as you like and It has proven to be  reliable and efficient. The separately controlled refrigerator and freezer compartments are well insulated and easily managed. The double stainless steel sink located on about the centerline has pressure water with a water mixing faucet. The Seagull filter water system provides water for drinking and cooking. There are foot pumps for  fresh water and sea water which is a wonderful thing. I like the hands free element and also sea water for filling pots and prewashing dishes. I just like saving water even if there is a watermaker. I like the seventeen square feet of counter space also. It is great to spread out with ample work space. There is plenty of space for galley ware and ships stores. A cabinet almost seven feet long with sliding louvered doors runs the full length of the galley, providing ideal storage for plates and glasses in one compartment and leaving two others for stores. An open shelf running atop the full length of the cabinet provides additional storage space behind a tall fiddle. A custom rack attached to a ceiling panel above that cabinet securely holds eight wine glasses. A second cabinet above the refrigerator and freezer provides several square feet of additional storage alongside the microwave. Two compartments for pots and pans, a large trash bin, and draws for silverware and other utensils, are located beneath the countertops. With other storage spaces in the main saloon and other cabins you will have had no trouble stocking the boat with enough food, beverages and other supplies to feed a four person crew for a month.

Mechanical & Electrical

Engine room and mechanical space is the entire center and aft section of the boat extending the entire beam of the boat. There is excellent access to this space with the main engine and all the mechanical systems along with storage for all the engine spares and supplies. The mechanical space is accessed through the watertight door from the aft port stateroom which has the upper and lower berths.. An overhead hatch can be opened from the cockpit to bath the engine room in sunlight. It is simply fabulous. The vessel is powered by a Yanmar 88hp turbocharged diesel. The drive train is connected through a V drive to a 1 ¼ inch prop shaft turning a feathering three-blade MaxProp with line cutters. The engine has been maintained to the highest standards. It’s in early mid-life with less than 2700 hours on the meter and it has just undergone a very deep maintenance to inspect and renew and replace anything and everything that did not look perfect. The dripless shaft seal and cutlass bearing were installed prior to the 2018 season during this recent inspection and maintenance process. The owners simply instructed “THEIR” finest mechanic in a particularly fine yard (Seller owned) and examine everything and do whatever it took to assure worry free operation.

The engine is supplied by three aluminum fuel tanks; two 70 gallon tanks and one 80 gallon tank for a total of 220 gallons of fuel.  At 2000 rpm, and a cruising speed of approximately 7.5 knots, the burn rate is less than 1.5 gallons per hour which is a good number for conservative planning purposes.   A range of about 800 miles is expected in most conditions. The dual Racor filters provide a nice comfort in that you can instantly switch filters with the flick of a valve without shutting down the engine. The engine and filters are easily accessed simply by walking through a watertight door from the head to the engine room.  Filters and other spare parts are at your fingertips in boxes and trays that are securely attached.

Sails & Rigging

Rigging

The Able Apogee is a solent rig design with a keel stepped aluminum mast, rising 68 feet above the water line. A GMT carbon fiber spinnaker pole is mounted on forward of mast. The mast is secured by rod rigging which was completely inspection and parts replaced in 2016 including the shroud turnbuckles. She is normally rigged as a sloop, with the removable inner forestay always ready to be deployed for use with a stay sail or storm jib. Because she is designed for serious voyaging, a storm trysail track and dedicated trysail halyard are part of the mast design.  Back up halyards are installed as well.

The boom is sort of a park avenue boom, with conventional slab reefing. There is new mainsail traveler installed in 207. Up front are two Furlex roller furling system, with a line led back to the cockpit, provides simple trouble free furling for the Genoa.

All Genoa and jib sheets are led through track mounted Lewmar “cars” (two for the Genoa and two for the jib sheets) for optimum sheet angles.

Reefing is completed by a electric Lewmar winch.

Winches

There are five winches in the cockpit and two on the mast.

  • The main halyard and furling systems are operated with a Lewmar 48 electric winch mounted under the dodger. Rope clutches forward of the winch allow easy switching between the halyard and furling lines.
  • Genoa sheets are operated by two Lewmar 64 winches, mounted on the cockpit coaming to the right and left of the wheel.
  • Sheets for other sails (main, stay sail, storm jib, etc) and control lines (topping lift, Genoa furling line, boom brake, etc) are handled with two Lewmar 48 manual winches located just forward of the 64’s. Once again, rope clutches forward of the winches allow each winch to serve multiple lines.
  • Two Lewmar 44 manual winches at the base of the mast raise the Genoa and spinnaker halyards.

Hull Construction & Design Details

The Apogee 50 has become the very definition of the proper offshore passagemaker. Watertight bulkheads, walk-in engine room, and Kevlar-E-glass construction with vacuum-bagged CoreCell core in 100-percent vinylester resin provide utmost strength, durability, and self-sufficiency for long voyages. Apogees are sailing to the far corners of the world, usually with just a couple on board, often completing 200-plus mile days in safety, style, and comfort.

Dinghy

An AB dinghy (an aluminum bottom RIB with a 9’0” length) is mounted on davits for easy deployment. A 15 horsepower Honda outboard is mounted on a bracket and is raised and lowered by a “crane” built into the arch.

 

Safety & Additional

  • Watertight bulkheads separating the forward compartment and engine room from the rest of the vessel.
  • Four electric bilge pumps (a main bilge pump, main day bilge pump, engine room bilge pump and forward compartment bilge pump) and one manual bilge pump. In addition, the water intake for the propulsion engine can be switched at the seacock to draw water from the bilge rather than the through hull. There is a high water bilge alarm.
  • 30” high double lifelines run from the bow pulpit to the forward edge of the cockpit
  • Cockpit safety railings -30” high steel rails surround the cockpit
  • Steel side rails make for a safer environment and extend the usable area of the cockpit
  • A “scoop” transom with a swim ladder provides a good way to get a tired swimmer back in the boat
  • Six person offshore life raft, stored in a soft valise, in a purpose-built compartment under the helm seat. (New inspection is required.)
  • Six Type 1 Offshore PFD’ are stored under the helm seat.
  • Pad eyes are mounted at the helm, and in the forward end of the cockpit area, to attach harnesses.
  • Jack lines are supplied, with attachment points at the bow and on either side of the cockpit coaming.
  • An ACR Global Fix Pro 406 Mhz GPS Epirb, with a battery expiration date of March 2022, is ready for use in an “abandon ship bag” together with an electronic strobe light, flares, flashlight and hand held radio.
  • An automatic Fireboy extinguisher is installed in the engine room.
  • Fire extinguishers are located in cabinets at the companionway, galley and forward cabin.
  • CO detectors are mounted in each sleeping cabin; a gas alarm and automatic LPG shut off switch is mounted in the galley.
  • A Lifesling is mounted alongside the cockpit.
