There is conflicting data/opinion on the safety of lithium batteries. How would you respond?
LiFePO₄ batteries are one of the safest options for boats because their chemistry is extremely stable and naturally resistant to overheating or fire. They don’t suffer from thermal runaway like other lithium types, and every battery includes a built-in Battery Management System (BMS) that prevents over-charging, over-discharging, and short circuits. When paired with proper marine-rated wiring and fusing, they are even safer than traditional lead-acid batteries—no acid, no fumes, and far less heat.
What is the equivalent HP?
Atticus has an Oceanvolt ServoProp 15 installed. It has an equivalent horsepower of 30HP but much higher torque than a diesel engine.
The standard diesel engine is rated at 57 hp, how does the 15kw engine compare in torque and max speed?
The Oceanvolt ServoProp 15 is able to push Atticus to hull speed at about 12kw of continuous power. The Yanmar would have more power but the additional speed attainable is very limited as pushing faster than hull speed becomes very inefficient.
How does the overall weight (engine and batteries) compare with the 57hp Yanmar?
Old system: 930 lbs: The Yanmar 57 plus sail drive weighed approximately 580 lbs. The starter and house batteries added about 350 lbs for a total of 930 lbs.
Electric propulsion system: 1076 lbs: The ServoProp 15 weighs 143 lbs. There are 8 MG batteries that weigh 116 lbs each (total 933 lbs). This system also replaced house batteries so the system total is 1076 lbs.
What is the range with a full tank of diesel?
There is a Fischer Panda AGT5 DC generator that can extend the cruising range. At full output the generator about .3 GPH. With a 63 gallon tank this would extend the range by about 200 hours and 600 to 800 nautical miles depending on sea state and speed.
What is the range without the diesel generator (or empty fuel tank)?
The MG battery bank is 58 kwh. So if cruising at 8 kw then the range would be 7.25 hours on pure battery or 36 to 40 miles depending on sea state. Solar panels and hydroregeneration extends this while under sail.
How much power can be generated when the ServoProp is in hydroregeneration mode?
Oceanvolt states the ServoProp can generate more than 1 kW at 7–8 knots and 3 kW at 11–12 knots, but also notes that real-world output varies with sea state, wind, and sailing conditions. For an ocean passage this would keep the entire system fully charged while under sail.
What are yearly maintenance requirements and cost?
Yearly maintenance is changing oil in the ServoProp 15 as well as replacing the Grease cap on the end of the ServoProp. Both are easy and inexpensive to do at a haul out.
Is it difficult to find repair facilities and parts in the U.S? Mexico/Carribean, Abroad?
These motors are pretty simple compared with the complication of the standard Yanmar engine (or any Diesel engine for that matter). That said, parts are available from Oceanvolt. They ship worldwide and can do remote diagnosis and have a network of installers/repair technicians.
For regular maintenance, the oil is Automatic transmission fluid which can be found anywhere. The grease cap comes from Oceanvolt and is fairly inexpensive. I keep and extra on the boat.
How often do you need to replace batteries?
The LifePO4 batteries are expected to last 20 years or longer.
Can you add more battery capacity?
Yes. Additional batteries can be added.
What is the typical lifespan of the motor?
It is expected 10 to 15 years but potentially longer than 20.
