DESCRIPTION:
Malolo is a rare blend of race-bred performance and refined cruising capability. This custom 55-foot sailing yacht was conceived for an experienced owner seeking exhilarating speed together with balance, control, and true offshore livability. Her sleek, modern lines and powerful yet manageable sail plan deliver impressive passage times without demanding a full race crew.Designed to sail — and sail fast — Malolo has proven capable of sustained high speeds while remaining composed and predictable. Whether reaching in trade winds or working to windward in fresh conditions, she rewards the helm with responsiveness, stability, and the kind of feedback normally found in dedicated performance yachts rather than cruising boats of this size.
Her lightweight, performance-oriented hull form, efficient appendages, and generous sail area make her quick across a wide range of conditions. Yet unlike stripped-out racers, Malolo features a finely finished interior, thoughtfully installed systems, and the accommodations necessary for extended cruising.
She is a true sailor’s yacht: fast, balanced, and deeply satisfying to helm, while still offering the comfort and craftsmanship expected of a high-quality custom cruiser.
- 2004 Achilles
MALOLO is a custom-built 55-foot performance cruising sailboat constructed in Ojai, CA, engineered with an emphasis on structural strength, weight control, and offshore durability. Her construction reflects careful engineering and quality craftsmanship, resulting in a yacht that is robust and purpose-built for demanding sailing.
Her hull and deck were built using advanced composite construction techniques to reduce weight while maintaining rigidity and long-term structural integrity. This approach enhances structural efficiency and contributes to her responsive sailing characteristics. Her underbody features a modern fin keel and balanced spade rudder, providing accurate helm response, directional stability offshore, and maneuverability in confined spaces.
MALOLO was built with contributions from an experienced and respected design team:
- Hull Design: Mark McIntire (designer/builder of two previous custom yachts)
- Interior and Structural Integration: Tim Kernan
- Mast: Supplied and installed by Seatek Marine, Wilmington, CA
- Keel Extension Design: Tim Kernan, Dixon Hall, Bob Locke, with additional input from Alan Andrews
- Carbon Fiber Chainplates: Designed by Alan Andrews, installed by Brad Fitzgerald
Malolo is powered by a reliable Yanmar 4JH3 – TE 75 hp diesel w/1740 hrs. The engine installation is clean and well-organized, with good access for routine service and maintenance.
Her mechanical systems reflect the same thoughtful, performance-minded approach seen throughout the vessel.
