Island Packet Yachts began in 1979, founded by naval architect Bob Johnson. At a time when many manufacturers were moving toward lighter hulls, fin keels, and spade rudders, Johnson developed cruising boats that emphasized stability, protection, and comfortable offshore passage-making. The brand became particularly recognizable for its full-length full foil keel, protected rudder, stout fiberglass construction, and traditional ivory-colored hulls.
Over the following decades, Island Packet has built more than 2,500 yachts and developed a loyal following among owners who valued practical cruising ability and robust construction. After a period of ownership changes, Darrell and Leslie Allen took over the company in January 2017. Having previously represented the brand as dealers for more than 25 years, they sought to preserve its established strengths while introducing greater customization and more contemporary accommodations. The 439 is the culmination of that approach.

The Yanmar 4JH80 is a modern, four-cylinder, 2.0-liter 80HP marine diesel engine offering an appealing combination of power, fuel efficiency, and compact dimensions to move HOLD FAST through the water easily, whether on flat water or punching through a storm. Featuring common-rail electronic fuel injection, the engine provides smooth, quiet operation, responsive throttle control, and cleaner combustion than older mechanically injected designs. Its turbocharger and intercooler help produce strong performance. The 4JH80 is particularly well suited to larger cruising sailboats that need reliable auxiliary power for maneuvering in tight quarters and maintaining reasonable motoring speeds over long distances. Overall, the 4JH80 is a capable, efficient auxiliary engine that balances modern technology with the reliability expected by serious cruising sailors. With a fuel stop max at 3200 RPM, she propels HOLD FAST easily around 7 knots at a very efficient 2000 to 2400 RPM for maximum fuel efficiency.

HOLD FAST uses a modern, cruising-oriented masthead rig designed to balance dependable sailing performance with ease of handling by a couple or small crew. A Solent (cutter) rig with twin headsails featuring a self-tacking 95% working jib makes upwind and crosswind performance so simple. A lighter air 170% reacher sail on an electric furler makes crosswind and downwind performance simple and easy. The goal is to keep captain and crew in the cockpit for all sail handling and this system accomplishes this easily.
The boat has a Selden anodized-aluminum mast and boom, wire standing rigging, and Harken deck hardware. Air draft is about 62 feet above the design waterline, 64’ with instrumentation at the mast head. The boom uses a solid vang, and the mainsheet traveler provides sail-shape adjustment. Both the in-mast furling main and working jib are Quantum sails upgrades to their Fusion membrane for stiffness, great sail shape and long life.
The standard Solent arrangement uses a 95% working jib on a track forward of the mast. Its self-tacking system lets the sail move across the boat automatically when tacking, minimizing crew effort. No more preparing crew for coming about. No more line handling - just set the main and working jib for upwind performance and then turn the wheel to tack your way upwind.
Once you’re done working your way upwind, a large 170% reaching sail sits forward on the outer stay in the Solent configuration with an Selden Furlex electric furler. It provides additional sail area in lighter winds and when sailing off the wind. Its adjustable sheet leads help optimize sail shape as the wind angle changes.

EXTERIOR TOUR:HOLD FAST makes a strong first impression with its distinctive profile, broad beam, and purposeful blue water cruising design. Starting at the bow, the yacht features a substantial anchor platform with twin anchor rollers, allowing for some versatility in anchoring. The deck-mounted windlass is actually configured to handle two discrete anchoring systems, a rare distinction between Island Packet and the most of the competition. The raised bulwarks, nonskid side decks, stainless-steel handrails, and double lifelines provide secure footing as you move aft, while the traditional sheerline and robust deck construction reflect Island Packet’s emphasis on offshore safety and practicality.
Moving aft toward the mast, the deck layout emphasizes straightforward sail handling. HOLD FAST has a Solent cutter rig, with adjacent roller-furling headsails including a 95% self-tacking working jib and a 170% lightweight reacher for light air off-wind performance. Harken winches, Spinlock line stoppers, and a rigid boom vang provide a well-organized setup for short-handed cruising. The cabin top incorporates an integrated dodger mount, while multiple opening ports, overhead hatches, and four Dorade-style vents give the yacht a purposeful, traditional cruising appearance.
The cockpit is the centerpiece of the exterior, offering long, ergonomically shaped seats, deep storage lockers, wide coamings, and a substantial Edson steering wheel on a protective pedestal. The helm area includes a compass, space for navigation electronics, and provisions for an autopilot, while the folding cockpit table makes the space equally useful for dining or relaxing at anchor. Harness attachment points and twin cockpit drains add practical safety features for offshore passages. It’s a very safe space in spirited off shore sea conditions.
Finishing the tour at the stern, the broad sugar-scoop transom features integrated steps, a pocket-style boarding ladder, and entrances from both port and starboard sides. Wraparound stainless-steel rails incorporate seating, and a hot-and cold freshwater shower makes rinsing off after a swim convenient. Taken as a whole, the Island Packet 439's exterior balances traditional styling with substantial deck hardware, secure movement around the boat, and a spacious cockpit designed for comfortable, extended cruising.
INTERIOR TOUR:As you step down the companionway steps, HOLD FAST welcomes you with a warm, refined interior featuring handcrafted imported African Sapele hardwood cabinetry, satin-finished woodwork, and solid Sapele flooring w/raised light maple inserts. Numerous opening ports and overhead hatches fill the cabin with natural light, while dimmable LED lighting, stainless-steel handholds, and well-secured abundant storage all reflect the yacht’s offshore cruising focus. The hinged companionway steps also provide convenient access to the engine compartment for routine maintenance.
The main salon serves as the heart of the living space, with a comfortable starboard settee that converts into a double berth and a folding dining table mounted against the bulkhead. Behind the table, a dedicated cabinet keeps wine bottles and glassware neatly stored. The optional port-side arrangement features a full settee, navigation station, and additional storage.
Moving forward, the chef’s galley is designed for preparing proper meals on extended cruises. Corian countertops with raised fiddles help keep items secure underway, while a molded-in white Corian single bowl, three-burner propane stove with oven, microwave, and drawer-style refrigerator and freezer provide the essentials for life aboard. There is generous cabinetry and drawer storage for cookware, utensils, and provisions, along with a dedicated filtered-water faucet.
The forward owner’s stateroom offers a comfortable queen-size island berth set at an angle, with storage beneath and cedar-lined hanging lockers on either side. A small settee adds a useful place to sit while dressing or relaxing. The private ensuite head includes a vanity, mirror, electric-flush toilet, and a separate standing shower with a built-in seat and folding shower door. The combination of privacy, storage, and comfortable sleeping accommodations makes this cabin well suited to extended cruising.
A second stateroom lies aft to port, featuring a generous double berth, cedar-lined hanging locker, and its own ensuite head with a separate shower. On the starboard side, aft of the galley, an additional walk-in compartment provides considerable flexibility. Depending on the boat’s configuration, this space can serve as a third sleeping cabin, a workshop, or an extended pantry and utility-storage area.
Throughout the interior, the Island Packet 439 emphasizes practical details that make a difference during longer voyages, from accessible storage and secure handholds to well-finished cabinetry and thoughtful engine access. With two private staterooms, two ensuite heads, a versatile third compartment, and a spacious salon and galley, HOLD FAST offers the comfort and functionality of a small cruising home while retaining the robust, purposeful character expected of an offshore sailing yacht.
