ARCTIC STAR — 2002 Grand Banks 46 Classic
Arctic Star is an exceptionally well-kept Grand Banks 46 Classic, the Ken Smith–designed two-stateroom trawler that defined Pacific Northwest cruising. Under her current ownership she has had roughly $220,000 in refinishing, upgrades and preventative maintenance, most of it through NW Explorations in Bellingham, and a 2026 NAMS condition and valuation survey rated her in very good, above-average condition with no priority findings. The survey punch list has been worked through.
She is powered by twin 420 HP Caterpillar 3126 diesels with Twin Disc transmissions and Aquadrive couplings, backed by a 12 kW Northern Lights generator. Naiad hydraulic fin stabilizers, a Sidepower bow thruster and Bennett trim tabs make her easy to run in any conditions. Navigation is a current Garmin suite: GPSMAP 8612xsv plus two 8616 displays, Fantom 24 radar, GHC20 autopilot, AIS and Icom VHF, with two new Starlink systems for connectivity anywhere, plus new handheld VHFs and a set of crew communication headsets.
Below, the classic Grand Banks layout gives two private staterooms, each with an ensuite head. The forward V-berth stateroom shares its head with a stall shower, washer and dryer. The aft stateroom has an island double berth, separate head and shower compartments, and a companionway to the cockpit. The raised salon has large windows, port and starboard side doors, a lower helm, an L-shaped lounge with drop-leaf table, buffet with icemaker, breakfast bar and entertainment center. The U-shaped galley carries a Force 10 stove, microwave, cold-plate refrigeration and new galley gear, with a teak guard panel at the galley steps. Comfort systems include a three-zone Webasto diesel hydronic furnace, new 110V King heaters in both staterooms, Marine Air reverse-cycle air conditioning with a new control panel, an FCI watermaker, dimmable interior lighting, and new interior and exterior cushions, canvas and blinds (2024).
The flying bridge has a forward helm with back-to-back seating and an aft L-shaped settee. The mast and crane have been refurbished. On deck: teak-overlay decks, a Lofrans Tigres windlass with a new 88 lb stainless Delta anchor and 300' of new chain, a stainless plow backup, and a Highfield SP330 tender with a Tohatsu 30 and a planing plate added for better performance. Two 10' Delta kayaks with racks are included.
Recent work includes extensive exterior varnish including the entry doors, window repairs, new starter batteries for mains, generator and thruster (December 2025), a new hot water tank, new icemaker and hoses, LED lighting, and main-engine, generator and stabilizer service. Safety gear includes a six-person Zodiac liferaft, EPIRB, Lifesling, and a Fireboy engine-room system with current fire extinguishers (March 2026).
