    DESCRIPTION:

Off The Grid was commissioned and delivered to her owner in Lymington, UK, in 2024. She is the first of the new Southerly 420s. She features a robust variable draft swing keel, twin rudders, a raised salon with excellent visibility, two heads, and a smartly designed rig/deck plan that makes the boat easy to handle.

Following delivery, the owners enjoyed several shake-down cruises before joining the 2024 ARC and sailing to Saint Lucia. After spending time aboard OTG, they have decided to purchase a larger yacht. This is a unique opportunity to purchase a nearly new Southerly 420.

The variable draft swing keel enables shoal draft freedom and deep draft performance! The Southerly 42 features a grounding plate (+/-4,630 lbs) with a variable draft swing keel (+/-3,461 lbs), which provides the freedom and versatility to sail in almost any water. With the keel lowered (8' 11"), the deep draft makes for fast, serious cruising. At the ‘touch of a button,’ the keel can be raised to give a shallow draft of just 2' 9" – perfect for shallow water exploring.

    Highlights:

    • Electric in-mast furling main
    • Self-tacking jib, Code 0, and a Tradewind Runner
    • (3) Electric winches
    • Water Maker
    • 5 kVA Generator
    • Bow and Stern Thrusters
    • Solar
    • CopperCoat antifouling
    • Full Raymarine Electronics Package

Variable Draft Swing Keel and Steering

The fixed ballast is an iron casting that acts as a grounding plate and stiffener for the keel and housing assembly. It is fitted into a recess in the hull in the area of the keel box with stainless steel bolts. The aerofoil-shaped keel is cast iron and incorporates a stainless-steel pivot at the leading edge. The keel is raised and lowered by a Dyneema pennant and hydraulic ram powered by an electrically driven pump with a hand-operated backup. All hydraulics are easily accessible for maintenance.

The steering is direct with minimum backlash and semi-balanced twin rudders, giving instantly responsive steering and precise directional stability. The transom is open with integral steps to give easy access to the cockpit.

    • Twin 30" stainless steel cockpit wheels
    • Single-level engine control
