2002 J/46 – Offshore Performance and Effortless Handling
The J/46 is a rare find—a true investment-grade sailing yacht that combines bluewater capability, speed, and elegance without the need for professional crew. Designed by Rod Johnstone and built to exacting standards by J Boats, this yacht was conceived for sailors who value performance, comfort, and low-maintenance ownership.
Two people can easily handle the J/46 under sail or power, achieving consistent 8-knot passage-making speeds thanks to her efficient hull and 76hp Yanmar diesel auxiliary. Her balanced sail plan, carbon fiber mast, and draft of 7’- 6" ensure stability and high performance.
Every detail of the J/46 was designed for ease of ownership. The interior joinery—crafted in varnished cherry or teak—is protected below decks, maintaining its beauty for years. The SCRIMP resin-infused composite hull and deck provide strength, rigidity, and long-term durability, while minimizing maintenance.
Derived from the legendary J/44, the J/46 inherits a proven racing pedigree—Fastnet, Sydney-Hobart, NYYC Queen’s Cup, and Transatlantic Race victories—while adding refinements for comfort and speed. The extra foot of sailing length, integrated transom swim platform, and thoughtful systems make her equally at home on coastal passages or ocean crossings.
With her high length-to-beam ratio, the J/46 tracks confidently in heavy seas and remains predictable under sail—whether powered by main or jib alone. She’s the tallest yacht that can navigate the Intracoastal Waterway, earning her reputation as the ultimate “maxi-ditch cruiser.”
