Hylas 46 Review

Designed by German Frers and built by Queen Long Marine. The Hylas 46 is carefully designed for fill the niche of a spacious and luxurious yacht that gives the seagoing capabilities of a larger vessel while being a perfect vessel that can be easily sailed by a couple. Frers succeeded in designing a modern, swift, and spacious 46-footer. The plumb bow and sharp entry with generous beam carried aft provide not only great sailing characteristics and excellent stability but amazing accommodations. Center cockpit layout with the great aft deck space and sugar scoop transom.

The Hylas 46 features a hull and deck design with a longer waterline and beam carried further aft improving performance and interior space. The hull of the Hylas 46 is completely hand laid solid fiberglass with 8 longitudinal stringers tied to each frame and bulkhead providing an unusually strong seamless monolithic structure in excess of A.B.S. standards. Watertight bulkheads fore and aft. The keel, offered in both standard and shoal draft configurations, is externally bolted lead using 12 solid stainless steel 1 3/8" bolts with backing plates. The distance between the rudder and keel is measured by design to provide excellent directional stability and balance. The semi-skegged rudder provides for a solid combination of strength, protection, and performance. The bottom of the rudder is 6" higher than the low point of the keel providing protection for the rudder in the event of a grounding.

Hylas built these boats with hand laid fiberglass (GRP) utilizing vinylester resins and isophthalic gel goat with two epoxy barrier coats for superior protection against osmosis and hull blistering. The deck is fiberglass sandwich construction with balsa core. Solid GRP fiberglass in all areas of the deck for deck fittings and stress areas. The deck is bonded to the hull with 3M 5200 epoxy and thru bolted every 5" with backing plates. Decks are offered in both molded contrasting non-skid and teak. The cutter rigged, two spreader Selden spar with alloy boom and semi-rigid boom vang is stepped through the deck. The rig is supported by 1 x 19 stainless steel wire and attached to stainless steel chain plates. Mainsail furling is most commonly in-mast with some offered with in-boom or standard slab reefing.

The salon cabin sole and trunk cabin is offered in both deck saloon and raised saloon options, providing more natural light and extra transverse portlights. The high-quality teak joinery gives a feeling of warmth and is comparable to the finest luxury yachts. The bright open arrangement includes a large master cabin aft with ensuite head and stall shower and a full beam forward guest stateroom with ensuite access to the forward head.

The walkthrough galley provides a workable layout at sea and at anchor with the inboard centerline sink and outboard stove and oven. There are many amenities including front and top opening refrigerator and freezer and custom long drawer that is deemed completely necessary for long items. Engine room under the cockpit has good access by removing companionway stairs, a panel in the galley and through a large door in the walkthrough to the aft cabin.

This luxurious center cockpit, two stateroom vessel has the accommodations you want with the sailing characteristics that make sailing safe, easy, and very enjoyable. The Hylas 46 is among the most popular options for cruising couples and continues to be one of the most in-demand boats in their class on the brokerage market.  The average time to sell is nearly half that of comparable boats, further demonstrating their desirability. The Hylas 46 also tends to hold their value very well. Generally, there are several Hylas 46’s on the brokerage market, allowing buyers the option to consider the custom qualities they find most desirable.

Quote from "Sailing a Serious Ocean" by John Kretschmer:

"A capable and very liveable center-cockpit, it hits the target for what most cruisers are looking for today. Like all Hylas models the 46 is built like a rock with first-rate gear. The design is definitely more modern than that of other Hylases on the list, the 44 and 49. I have plenty of offshore miles on this model and wouldn't hesitate to take it anywhere."
