Newport International Boat Show Guide 2025

DWY | Your 2025 Guide to the Newport Show

Each September, Newport, Rhode Island, becomes the heart of the yachting world. For four days, the waterfront comes alive with two of the most important events on the boating calendar: the Newport International Boat Show (NIBS) and the Newport Brokerage Boat Show (NBBS).

I’ve been attending these shows for years, and they remain some of the best opportunities in North America to see an incredible variety of yachts, meet industry leaders, and immerse yourself in the unique maritime culture that defines Newport. Whether you’re considering your first yacht, evaluating your next step up, or simply looking to enjoy the atmosphere, here’s how to make the most of your time in Newport this September.

Newport International Boat Show

  • Dates: Thursday, September 11 – Sunday, September 14, 2025
  • Hours: 10 AM–6 PM (Thurs–Sat), 10 AM–5 PM (Sun)
  • Location: Spanning more than 17 acres across Newport’s downtown waterfront, including Bannister’s Wharf, Bowen’s Wharf, Perry Mill Wharf, Market Square, Newport Yachting Center, and more.
  • Admission: Purchase Tickets Here

Y15ts6Rw-1

This is one of the biggest in-water shows in the country, featuring a wide range of sailboats and powerboats, from 15-foot center consoles to 90-foot luxury yachts. It’s also where many builders debut their latest models for the first time in the U.S.

What Not to Miss

  • New Boat Premieres – If you’re curious about what’s new and innovative, this is the place. You’ll find U.S. debuts and fresh designs from many of the world’s leading builders.

  • Newport for New Products – Every year, the show recognizes the most innovative boats and products. It’s a great way to get a first look at what’s next in design, technology, and outfitting.

  • Educational Seminars and  Tech Talks – From hands-on diesel and electrical workshops to seminars on seamanship and outfitting, there’s a wealth of knowledge to be gained.

  • Windward VIP Lounge – A little oasis in the middle of the action. If you want to enjoy early entry, cocktails, and a relaxed spot to regroup, the VIP lounge is worth it.

Newport Brokerage Boat Show

  • Dates: Thursday, September 11 – Sunday, September 14, 2025
  • Hours: 10 AM–6 PM (Thurs–Sat), 10 AM–5 PM (Sun)
  • Location: Safe Harbor Newport Shipyard, One Washington Street
  • Admission: Free!

Brokerage Show

Running alongside the International Show is the Brokerage Show, held at Safe Harbor Newport Shipyard. This event features one of the top collections of brokerage yachts in the country, including sail, power, and motor yachts usually ranging from 40 to well over 100 feet. Many of these yachts are bluewater-capable or high-end luxury vessels, making it an unmatched opportunity for serious buyers to explore multiple options in one location. The atmosphere is a bit more relaxed than the International Show, providing an excellent chance to compare brokerage yachts with new models. A water taxi operates between the two shows throughout the day for just $3 round-trip, making it easy to experience both.

Why Attend with David Walters Yachts

The shows can be overwhelming—there’s a lot to see, and it’s easy to get caught up in the energy of the event. Having one of our brokers alongside you changes the experience entirely.

We don’t just walk the docks—we create a plan that’s tailored to your interests. If you’re looking for a performance cruising sailboat, we’ll take you straight to the models that make sense for your sailing plans. If you’re evaluating brokerage yachts, we’ll set up private showings and give you candid feedback on value, condition, and suitability relative to your requirements.

We also take care of the details that matter. That means scheduling sea trials, arranging private appointments, and making sure you’re not wasting time in long lines. At the Brokerage Show, where dozens of firms are side by side, we’ll guide you aboard the yachts worth your attention and represent your interests if you’re ready to move forward.

Most importantly, we act as your advocate. We can provide honest comparisons between new builds and brokerage yachts, walk you through the true cost of ownership, and help you evaluate builders on construction quality, reputation, and value.

And outside the shows, we’ll share the kind of local advice you’d expect from a friend—where to grab a bite between appointments, the best spots to enjoy a sunset, and how to navigate the logistics so your time in Newport is effortless.

Practical Tips

Over the years, I’ve learned that a little preparation can make the difference between an enjoyable day on the docks and an exhausting one. Here are the tips I always share with clients before they head to Newport:

  • Parking & Transportation – Downtown parking fills quickly and can be stressful. The easiest option is Easton’s Beach (175 Memorial Blvd, Newport, 02840), where you’ll find a large lot with continuous complimentary shuttles to and from the show. The cost of a parking pass is $40 per vehicle per day.  If you’re staying outside Newport, consider the Jamestown or Providence ferries. They drop you close to the show and let you avoid the hassle of downtown traffic.

  • Footwear – Plan for a lot of walking and frequent boarding of yachts. Wear comfortable shoes with non-marking soles that slip on and off easily. Many exhibitors require you to remove shoes or wear protective covers before stepping aboard.

  • Timing Your Visit – The shows are busiest in the middle of the day. If you want time for in-depth conversations with builders, designers, or brokers, mornings are best. The last few hours of the afternoon can also be a good time to circle back to yachts you want a second look at, as crowds tend to thin.

  • Appointments & Sea Trials – Some of the most popular yachts—particularly new debuts—require appointments to board. If you’re seriously evaluating a yacht, schedule these showings in advance with a David Walters Yachts broker. Sea trials may also be available for select boats, but these are almost always arranged ahead of time and reserved for serious buyers.

  • Weather Preparation – September weather in Newport is beautiful but unpredictable. Dress in layers, bring a light jacket for the evening, and don’t forget sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat. The docks can be bright and warm during the day, but evenings cool quickly with the harbor breeze.

    NEWPORT WEATHER

  • Stay Hydrated & Take Breaks – With so much to see, it’s easy to lose track of time. Carry a bottle of water and take advantage of shaded seating areas or the VIP Lounge if you have access. A quick break can make a full day on the docks much more enjoyable.

  • Food & Refreshments – There are food vendors within the show, but if you’re planning a full day, it can be worth stepping just outside the gates for lunch. Places along Thames Street and Bowen’s Wharf are close enough that you won’t lose much time. [My Favorite Restaurants in Newport]

  • Download the Show Map – Before you arrive, download the official show map and highlight the boats you don’t want to miss. The show sprawls across several wharves, and having a plan will save you a lot of backtracking. Pre-Register with a DWY Broker to help plan your visit and ensure access to the boats you're interested in!

  • Combine the Two Shows – Don’t forget that the Brokerage Show at Safe Harbor Newport Shipyard is just a short water shuttle ride away. For $3, you can see both shows on the same day. It's also an enjoyable 10-minute walk if you're up for a stroll. If you’re in the market, the ability to compare new models at NIBS with brokerage yachts at NBBS is invaluable.

  • Evening Strategy – Newport’s restaurants and bars fill quickly during the show. If you have your eye on a specific place for dinner, make reservations in advance. Alternatively, plan a casual early dinner so you can head back to the docks late in the afternoon when the crowds thin for a quieter look at your top choices.

  • Travel Light – A small bag or backpack is helpful for carrying a notebook, show guide, water, and a jacket. Avoid bringing too much—you’ll be stepping on and off boats all day.

  • Capture Notes & Photos – After the third or fourth yacht, details can start to blend together. Keep a notebook or use your phone to jot down impressions and take a few quick photos. It’ll make reviewing later much easier when it comes time to compare options.

The shows are meant to be fun, and with a bit of planning, they can also be highly productive. By pacing yourself, staying comfortable, and having a clear plan of which yachts to prioritize, you’ll get far more out of your visit.

Beyond the Docks

Part of what makes the Newport shows so special is that they’re held in a city with such character and history. Even if you’re here primarily for the yachts, it’s worth setting aside some time to experience what makes Newport one of the most unique boating destinations in the world.

  • Cliff Walk – This 3.5-mile coastal path is one of the great highlights of Newport. On one side, you’ll have sweeping views of the Atlantic as waves crash against the rocky shoreline; on the other, you’ll pass by some of the most iconic Gilded Age mansions. It’s a beautiful way to take in both natural and architectural grandeur, and it can be enjoyed as a full walk or just a shorter section if time is tight.

  • The Mansion Tours – Newport’s historic “summer cottages” are anything but modest. The Breakers, Marble House, Rosecliff, and Chateau-sur-Mer are all open for tours and provide a glimpse into America’s Golden Age. Each mansion has its own style and story, from Vanderbilt opulence to ornate French-inspired design. For anyone who appreciates craftsmanship, history, or architecture, these are a must.

  • Bowen’s Wharf & Thames Street – This is the heart of downtown Newport. You’ll find boutiques, galleries, and a wide selection of restaurants and bars. It’s lively in the evenings, especially during boat show week, and the perfect place to unwind after a day on the docks. Bowen’s Wharf also hosts live music and events throughout the season, which adds to the festive atmosphere.

  • Sailing Excursions – Newport is often called the sailing capital of the world, and it’s easy to see why once you’re out on the water. Several companies offer excursions aboard classic schooners, America’s Cup yachts, and even private charters. A sunset sail on Narragansett Bay is something I recommend to everyone—it’s a completely different way to see the harbor and the city skyline.

If you have more time, there are other parts of Newport worth exploring:

  • Fort Adams State Park – Home to the largest coastal fortification in the United States, Fort Adams also offers panoramic views of the bay and hosts concerts and events throughout the summer.

  • Newport Harbor Walk – A great way to explore the working waterfront, with a mix of marinas, shipyards, and scenic pathways.

  • Beaches – Easton’s Beach (First Beach) is closest to downtown, while Second and Third Beach offer a quieter setting a short drive away.

  • Newport Vineyards & Breweries – Just outside of town, you’ll find local wineries and craft breweries—perfect for a relaxed afternoon away from the bustle of the shows.

Newport is more than just a backdrop for the shows; it’s a destination in its own right. The city’s mix of maritime heritage, architectural history, and coastal charm makes it well worth exploring, whether you’re here for a day or planning a longer stay.

Dining in Newport

After a long day on the docks, one of the great pleasures of being in Newport is deciding where to eat. The city has a thriving food scene that blends its maritime heritage with New England traditions and modern coastal cuisine. Whether you’re looking for a fine dining experience overlooking the harbor, a lively raw bar with friends, or a casual spot to refuel, Newport has something for every appetite. Here are some of my top recommendations:

  • The Mooring – A staple of the Newport dining scene, famous for its harbor views and seafood-driven menu. Don’t miss their signature “bag of doughnuts” lobster fritters, a fun and delicious starter that pairs perfectly with a glass of chilled white wine. The Mooring is ideal for a waterfront dinner after a day at the International Show.

  • 22 Bowen’s Wine Bar & Grille – Located right on Bowen’s Wharf, this is the spot if you’re in the mood for a refined evening. Known for its excellent steak and seafood, along with one of the best wine lists in town, 22 Bowen’s is equally suited for a client dinner or a quiet evening out. Ask for a table by the window for sweeping views of the harbor.

  • Midtown Oyster Bar – If you love oysters, this is your place. Midtown offers an impressive raw bar with oysters sourced locally and from across New England. It’s lively, casual, and perfect for a mid-afternoon bite or a fun dinner with friends. Beyond oysters, the menu includes creative seafood dishes, sushi, and hearty entrees.

  • Clarke Cooke House – More than just a restaurant, Clarke Cooke House is a Newport institution. Spanning multiple levels, you can choose from fine dining in the SkyBar, a lively atmosphere in the Boom Boom Room, or casual fare on the porch. It’s where the sailing crowd gathers, and you’re just as likely to bump into a world-class sailor as you are a fellow yacht owner.

  • Brick Alley Pub – For something more relaxed, Brick Alley Pub delivers hearty comfort food in a quirky, welcoming setting. Known for its nachos, burgers, and expansive beer selection, it’s a great place to wind down after a busy day.

  • The Black Pearl – Famous for its clam chowder, served either in the rustic tavern or in the more formal Commodore’s Room. A Newport classic.
  • Belle’s Café at Newport Shipyard – A great place to start your day if you're heading to the brokerage show first! A real hidden gem for breakfast or lunch, right in the heart of the working shipyard.

Newport is very much a food town, so it’s worth making reservations—especially during boat show week, when restaurants fill quickly. No matter your taste, the dining here is an extension of the city’s charm: casual yet refined, steeped in tradition but always fresh.
