The Top Ten Budget-Friendly Downeast Yachts

Dailey Tipton | A Lifetime on the Water

Dailey - Signature BlockFor more than fifty years, I have been a dedicated student of sailing and power vessels. This lifelong passion has taken me to ports across the globe, from racing sailboats internationally to campaigning more than ten racing yachts on the Chesapeake Bay.

A decade ago, my wife and I shifted from sail to power, using a motor yacht as our summer weekend home. That decision led us to own three Downeast-style vessels. For a lifelong sailor, the transition to power brought a steep learning curve. Looking back, I might have been wise to buy the True North 38 I own today ten years ago—but then I would have missed the lessons and enjoyment that came with the Marlow 38 Prowler and the Mochi Craft 44 Dolphin (imported from Croatia during the Covid pandemic). Each boat added to my understanding of what truly matters in this class of vessel.

About Dailey Tipton

When I joined David Walters Yachts in 2024, I revisited a 2020 article titled Top 10 Downeast Boats You Can Buy Under $1 Million.” At the time, I was selling my Mochi Craft for roughly $400,000 and targeting a capable cruiser for under $300,000. While the article offered a helpful perspective, it was not entirely aligned with the realities of my search. I also found that many of my clients today are shopping in the sub-$500,000 range for Downeast yachts.

This article aims to share my personal experiences and offer a budget-driven perspective for buyers seeking to define their ideal Downeast boat.

Top Ten List

Selecting the “best” Downeast yacht depends heavily on priorities: age versus price, overall size, features, propulsion systems, and, of course, that elusive “cool factor.” New Downeast yachts often start at $800,000 and climb well past $1 million. Fortunately, the pre-owned market offers excellent opportunities for discerning buyers.

Here are ten standouts that strike a balance between price, quality, and functionality, with essential considerations noted for each.

Zeelander 44

Zeelander z44

  • Why it’s a top choice: Striking design and head-turning lines set the Zeelander 44 apart. Volvo IPS propulsion delivers outstanding performance, while the aft engine placement maximizes interior volume.

  • Price & availability: A 2012 model is currently listed at $599,000; prices rise significantly for newer examples. Finding one on a budget can be a challenge.

  • Considerations: IPS drives require specialized care and maintenance. Exterior teak accents are often laminate decals, which will weather over time.

Hinckley 36 Picnic Boat

Hinckley 36-1

  • Why it’s a top choice: Simply put, it’s a Hinckley. The Picnic Boat is iconic, blending luxury craftsmanship, reliable performance, and timeless appeal. Ideal for day boating or short overnight trips.

  • Price & availability: Classic 36-foot and smaller versions are frequently available for under $350,000.

  • Considerations: Typically powered by Yanmar engines with Hamilton jet drives, which are efficient but demand attentive maintenance.

Back Cove 37 Downeast

Back Cove 37
  • Why it’s a top choice: Built in Maine, Back Cove emphasizes simplicity, efficiency, and ease of operation. The 37 is a modern, practical design with high owner satisfaction.

  • Price & availability: Models from 2014 and newer typically range from $450,000 to $750,000.

  • Considerations: The single-engine, tunnel-hull design allows access to shallow anchorages, although docking requires skill due to the absence of twin screws.

Sabre 42 Salon Express

Sabre 42 Salon Express
  • Why it’s a top choice: Sabre combines classic Maine craftsmanship with elegant design and substantial resale value. The 42 Salon Express remains one of their most admired models.

  • Price & availability: 2005–2008 examples are often in the $400,000–$500,000 range. Later versions with updated systems exceed $800,000.

  • Considerations: Early builds feature direct-drive shafts; later builds employ Volvo IPS pods. Buyer preference should guide selection.

MJM 40z, 36z, and 34z

MJM40z
  • Why they’re top choices: MJM pioneered advanced composite construction, delivering lightweight, efficient, and responsive yachts. The z-series is sleek, modern, and highly fuel-efficient.

  • Price & availability: Depending on model and age, prices range from just under $400,000 to well over $800,000.

  • Considerations: Propulsion options vary, including direct drive, stern drive, and pod options. Buyers should confirm the setup that best suits their needs before considering a purchase.

True North 38

True North 38
  • Why it’s a top choice: A rugged semi-custom cruiser with New England character. Practical features, such as roof racks for kayaks or bikes, add versatility. Offshore-capable yet approachable for coastal cruising.

  • Price & availability: Typically, $200,000–$360,000. Heritage editions include a generator and air conditioning. Post-2010 versions with outboard power trade at a higher price.

  • Considerations: Most models feature Yanmar 440hp or 480hp direct drives with a Propeller protected in a mini keel and a double-hung rudder. Modestly appointed but highly functional.

Grand Banks Eastbay 47

Eastbay 47
  • Why it’s a top choice: Grand Banks has set the standard for Downeast–inspired yachts, offering timeless design, robust construction, and enduring value.

  • Price & availability: Early to mid-2000s models typically range from $450,000 to $750,000. A 2007 Classic was recently listed at $489,000.

  • Considerations: Older systems require ongoing care, but overall build quality is exceptional.

Legacy 42 Downeast

Legacy 42
  • Why it’s a top choice: Produced between 2006 and 2010, the Legacy 42 combines elegant lines with a spacious, well-lit interior. Excellent visibility makes it a favorite for coastal cruising.

  • Price & availability: $299,000–$550,000, depending on condition and outfitting.

  • Considerations: Most are powered by Volvo IPS pods, which are great for maneuverability, although they are more complex to maintain than traditional shafts.

Duffy 37 Downeast

  • Price & availability: Generally, between $235,000 and $550,000.

  • Considerations: Powered by Cummins or Volvo direct drives. Interiors are straightforward and practical, reflecting the boat’s workboat heritage.

Hunt Harrier 36

Hunt Harrier 36

  • Why it’s a top choice: The Hunt Harrier 36 delivers one of the best rides in the Downeast segment, thanks to Ray Hunt's legendary deep-V hull. Stylish, fast, and exceptionally well built.

  • Price & availability: Typically between $250,000 - $425,000

  • Considerations: Not as spacious as some competitors, but unmatched handling for its size.

Final Thoughts

The Downeast market offers a wealth of options for buyers seeking quality, style, and performance without breaking the $500k-dollar mark. Each of the yachts highlighted above represents a compelling balance of design, value, and capability.

Having owned several myself and guided clients through numerous transactions, I can confidently say that the right Downeast yacht is available for nearly every budget. The key is understanding not only the specifications and price but also the nuances of propulsion, maintenance, and lifestyle fit.

In the end, the best yacht is the one that excites the soul and instills confidence every time you cast off—and brings joy every time you return to the dock.
